Purpose and intent are often seen as final in terms of an object’s existence.

I find interest in how a new purpose can be brought to an object after it has lost both its value and initial intent.

Damaged or broken it is largely seen as rendering an object of lesser worth and value and perhaps why I find the Japanese practice of kintsugi of such interest. It is not the purpose of simple repair (an art and craft in itself) but the respect shown to a piece that has served a purpose and highlighting the damage with dusted precious metal (most often gold). In so doing it is respecting its history, highlighting the flaws that exist in everything. The quietness of thought is often unseen.

Vessel No 1 is part of a broken apex roof tile created for the purpose of keeping out rainwater and is now repurposed as a vessel to keep water in, an external protecting cover now an internal holding vessel allowing life to be extended.

I have placed underneath and out of site when in use, a base gilded in 23.5ct gold leaf as a mark of appreciation to the service this simple object offers and adapts to.
